- a 16 by 9 screen means it will be more rectangular, or wider first of all. Also, for HDTV, 16 by 9 is the standard. Regular TV is in a 4 by 3 format. You may still get black bars on the top and bottom of the little 7 inch screens when playing a 'widescreen' non HDTV format movie. I always rent or buy 'Full Screen' movies.!!
- It just means the screens are "wide" not "square" 4.3 . the 16.9 means the length and side are in a ratio of 16/9 which is equal to 1.78 So if you measure the length and divide it by the height of your screen you should get 1.78 for any size screen 7', 15', 20',42' and 60' 16.9 screens
